  • St. Eustatius (Statia) Underwater - This spotted moray eel was not at all shy. Though morays will often withdraw from a scuba diver, as I settled on the bottom, this one came out of his hole in the reef to look me over. © Rick Collier
  • St. Eustatius (Statia) Underwater - Near the end of our scuba dive, we were startled at our safety stop when this huge great barracuda suddenly swam directly up to us out of the blue. He was very curious and proceeded to check everything out before he decided to move along. © Rick Collier
  • St. Eustatius (Statia) Underwater - As we neared the surface at the end of our scuba dive, we looked up to see that it was obviously raining very hard on the surface. And then the huge great barracuda swam over us and was briefly silhouetted against the surface. No doubt he was checking out the float that our divemaster put up to mark out spot during the safety stop. © Rick Collier
  • Saba Underwater - The "Twilight Zone" dive site is a unique experience for a scuba diver. Emerging from very deep water to make a small peak at about 80 feet, you can often see large pelagics (deep-water species) here. An approximately 8-foot reef shark cruised by our group several times. © Rick Collier
  • Saba Underwater - A scuba diver in the Caribbean should watch the sandy bottom closely. This southern stringray watched me, but never moved. © Rick Collier

  • Red Sea, Egypt -- The common lionfish, also known by some as the turkeyfish, is common in the Red Sea. The sharp spines in the lionfish's fins are poisonous, and are its primary defense from predators. When approached or threatened, the lionfish will spread its fins wide and seek to turn its face towards the reef, so that a potential attacker is presented with an array of poisonous spines. © Rick Collier / RickCollier.com.<br />
