• Luxor, Egypt -- The "Valley of the Dead" or "Valley of the Kings" is a canyon in the western wall of the Nile River valley, not far from Luxor. To accomodate tourists, paths have been made with bordering walls. Excavated tombs are marked with walls and door at the excavation entrance, together with informational signs. Tourists are told that this site was selected for royal tombs because of the pyramid-shaped rock formation at the top of the rock walls, which was seen as auspicious by the ancient Egyptians. © Rick Collier / RickCollier.com.
• Luxor, Egypt -- View of the "Valley of the Dead" or "Valley of the Kings" from the tomb of Thutmos III (Thutmes or Thutmosis III). The valley is a canyon in the western wall of the Nile River valley, not far from Luxor. To accomodate tourists, paths have been made with bordering walls and some stairs and railings installed. Many of the more remote tombs have attendants and locals who guard the tombs and may also "rent" pieces of cardboard for use as a fan in the humid caves or sell cool drinks. © Rick Collier / RickCollier.com.
• Luxor, Egypt -- The funerary temple of Hatshepsut, cut into the cliffs at the west edge of the Nile River valley at Deir el-Bahri, near the Valley of the Kings. Hatshepsut famously was the queen who ruled Egypt as a king (male) and may have heretically had herself burried as Pharoah in the Valley of the Kings. Subsequent pharoahs tried to obliterate evidence and monuments to Hatshepsut (beginning possibly from the reign of Thutmos III, several years after Hatshepsut's death and entombment). © Rick Collier / RickCollier.com.
