The Ancient World
Luxor, Egypt -- Queen (pharoah) Hatshepsut had two massive obelisks erected near the main temple of Amun at Karnak. Subsequent pharoahs sought to remove her influence but could not deface stellae honoring Amun, so they built walls to hide the obelisks from view and worship. Karnak was built over many generations of Egyptian pharoah, as each successive king added pieces to this temple honoring the most significant god of the ancient Egyptian pantheon, the god Amun (later, Amon-Ra), the sun god. © Rick Collier / RickCollier.com.
