The Ancient World
Medinet Habu -- the Mortuary Temple of Ramses III, near Luxor, Egypt. The walls inside the temple's first and second courts are inscribed with important scenes from the pharoah's life. This scene shows the pharoah smiting three prisoners, and displays evidence that he took their heads in battle. The original paint and coloration have been protected by the extraordinary depth of the carvings and is still visible in some parts of the wall. © Rick Collier
