Aswan, Egypt -- The unfinished obelisk. Much of the red granite stonework in ancient egyptian temples and monuments came from quarries around present-day Aswan. The unfinished obelisk was found at the northern quarry and was probably abandoned when the rock cracked during the quarrying process. This artifact and the tools found around it have provided valuable insight into how the ancient Egyptians quarried and dressed the stone for their monuments. © Rick Collier / RickCollier.com.
• Kom Ombo, Egypt -- The unique ancient Egyptian temple at Kom Ombo was built during the Ptolemaic period and was unique in that it was divided symmetrically between two gods along an East-West axis. The north half was dedicated to the falcon god Haroeris (Horus the Elder, a form of the more common Horus) and the south to Sobek, the crocodile god of fertility. © Rick Collier / RickCollier.com.
• Aswan, Egypt -- The Philae Temple was built on a small island just above the first cataracts in the Nile River. The site of a temple dedicated to the cow god Hathor, this temple site was held sacred by both northern (Theban) and sourthern (Nubian) dynasties. The temple complex as now viewed was actually built and used in the later Ptolemaic and subsequent Roman dynasties. The original island location was submerged by the building of the Aswan High Dam, so the temple was relocated and is now visited on the island Agilika. Before being relocated, the temple was partially submerged for many years, and a water line can be observed on some of the pylon walls. © Rick Collier / RickCollier.com.
