• Oia Town, Santorini, Greece. A rooftop is whitewashed, next door to the blue dome of a Greek Orthodox church. Santorini is one of several islands that ring the blown-out remains of an ancient volcano, rising from the deep ocean in the Aegean Sea. The volcano exploded, leaving several islands surrounding a very deep patch of sea -- actually once the caldera of the volcano. The two large towns on Santorini, Oia and Fira towns, overlook the caldera. © Rick Collier
• Deir el-Bahri (Temple of Hatshepsut), near Luxor, Egypt. A tired tour guide rests in a niche in a shaded portion of Hatshepsut's temple (also tomb). Above his head is the only extant heiroglyphic representation of Hatshepsut. This picture was actually defaced like all others in theis temple, but it was restored after the fact by one of her successors, Ramses. Hatshepsut was scourged by her successors, as the only woman who ever had the temerity to rule Egypt as a man (pharoah). © Rick Collier
